Indications/Uses
Duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, NSAID-associated complications, peptic ulcer associated w/ H. pylori, GERD, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, prevention of acid aspiration syndrome, acid related dyspepsia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Prosec NSAID-associated complications 20 mg once daily for 4 wk if not fully healed. Prophylaxis in patients w/ history of NSAID-associated duodenal or gastric ulcers, gastroduodenal lesions or dyspeptic symptoms who require continued NSAID treatment 20 mg once daily. Peptic ulcer associated w/ H. pylori Prosec 40 mg once daily + clarithromycin 500 mg bid + amoxicillin 1 g bid. Duration: 1 wk. Acid-related dyspepsia 10-20 mg daily for 2-4 wk. GERD 20-40 mg daily for 4-12 wk. Maintenance: 20 mg daily. Childn 0.7-1.4 mg/kg daily up to max of 40 mg daily for 4-12 wk. PUD Single daily dose of 20-40 mg for 4 wk (duodenal ulcer) or 8 wk (gastric ulcer). Maintenance: 10-20 mg daily. Acid aspiration prophylaxis 40 mg at night before surgery; 40 mg on the day of surgery 2-6 hr pre-op. Prosec IV Duodenal & gastric ulcers, GERD 40 mg once daily. Acid aspiration prophylaxis 40 mg completed 1 hr prior to surgery. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome Initially 60 mg daily. Doses >60 mg daily should be divided & given bid.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Exclude possibility of malignancy before treatment when gastric ulcer is suspected. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Arthralgia, paresthesia, aggression, blurred vision, taste disturbances, peripheral edema, hyponatremia, agranulocytosis, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, interstitial nephritis & hepatotoxicity. Reversible confusional states, agitation, depression & hallucinations.
Drug Interactions
Prolonged elimination of diazepam, phenytoin, warfarin & other vit K antagonists. Affected absorption of other drugs (eg, dasatinib, ketoconazole & itraconazole).
